For independent learning consultants

Build an AI learning product for a professional association

A practical first test for CPD and member-learning consultants: turn professional judgment into fictional scenarios that an association can review and use.

A magnifying glass reveals the detail of a gold seam in dark stone.

Start with the expertise and relationships you already have

If you design continuing professional development, member education or facilitated workshops, your advantage may be understanding how a profession makes difficult decisions. An association's education director could be a reachable buyer. That is a more useful starting point than launching a broad AI consultancy.

This direction fits an independent consultant who can write learning activities, run a review process and protect delivery time. Warm access to an association helps. It is a poor fit if you need immediate income, cannot reach a subject reviewer, or want an entirely passive product.

Sell a chance to practise a decision

Consider a fictional situation: a member receives a plausible AI-generated answer that leaves out a material limitation. Should they verify it, disclose its use, escalate it or stop? Different choices lead to different consequences. A useful scenario makes those choices concrete, then gives the facilitator questions for discussion.

Your product would be the learning design and facilitator materials. The association supplies professional authority, approves the subject content and decides how to run its member session. You are not selling legal advice, professional certification or a declaration that an AI system is safe.

Keep the first offer small enough to deliver

A possible six-week pilot contains six fictional branching scenarios for three member roles, participant decision cards, a facilitator guide, one handover and a 90-day change note. Agree the review dates, number of revisions and acceptance criteria before quoting. Start with an ordinary document or workshop format; a custom learning platform is not necessary to test the proposition.

Use invented situations rather than real member cases. Agree ownership, licence scope and any permitted reuse in writing. Materials approved for one profession cannot simply be sold to another as professionally approved content.

Compare what the buyer already uses

The association may already have courses, guidance, a learning platform, internal trainers or an external workshop provider. Ask what those options do well. Your case depends on a specific practice activity they want and can budget for, not on asserting that existing education is inadequate.

Account for writing, subject review, accessibility, revisions, facilitator preparation, selling time and updates. Reuse may improve later economics, but every new licence still needs a buyer and an agreed scope. Do not price from an imagined share of an association's revenue.

Ask five questions before building the full pilot

  • Which three member roles face a specific AI judgment problem in the next learning calendar?
  • What guidance or training already covers it, and what practice activity is still missing?
  • Who can approve the professional content, and when can they review a sample?
  • Who owns the budget, and what paid first step could they actually authorize?
  • What would make the association accept, revise or stop the pilot?

Use a small sample to earn the next decision

Prepare one fictional scenario and a short facilitator note. Use a permissioned introduction to discuss it with an education lead. A compliment is useful feedback, but it is not a purchase commitment. Look for a named reviewer, a scheduled session and a discussion of scope and payment before producing all six scenarios.

Pause if there is no budget owner, no reviewer, or the requested output is advice you are not qualified to provide. Reshape the offer if the buyer wants an existing course instead. Those outcomes can save more time than a polished proposal.

Explore whether it fits your circumstances

Upside Radar's free Scan considers your experience, buyer access, time and constraints. Describe those honestly; this direction will not suit every learning consultant, and the Scan may find no suitable match. A no-match does not spend your free result credit.

For a qualifying selected direction, the optional US$69 Decision Pack develops the offer, economics, uncertainties and first tests, with an included 30-day Test Window. It is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. Start with the free result and decide whether more detail would help you act.

Use these principles on a real brief.
