Opportunity discovery

How to find business opportunities worth testing

Move from broad trends to specific buyers, painful moments, money flows, and reachable first tests.

Light reveals a crystalline face in a rough stone just beyond the edge of smoked glass.

Start with a specific moment, not a broad trend

A trend becomes commercially useful only when it changes a buyer’s behaviour, cost, risk, speed, revenue, or ability to complete an important job.

Look for five connected elements

  • A reachable buyer
  • A repeated painful or valuable moment
  • An unsatisfactory workaround or incumbent
  • A credible trigger to pay
  • A first offer that can be tested before building the final system

Compare mechanisms, not cosmetic variations

Three ideas are useful when they represent meaningfully different ways to create and capture value—not three names for the same managed service.

Use these principles on a real brief.
